Halloween (1978)- The original Halloween film that was directed by John Carpenter was legendary. The story line and everything was perfect from beginning to end. The movie opens up with Michael Myers killing his sister and being sent away which is all we really need to know, we don’t need a motive or anything I love the mystery behind it. Even as we get further along into the movie after Michael escapes from the psychiatric prison he doesn’t start killing right away he just stalks his victims for the majority of the film and during that we slowly learn why he would go back to Haddonfield and we eventually find out that Lorie(Jamie Lee Curtis) is Michael Myers sister. So Overall the story was great. Now to get to the actors, Jamie Lee Curtis did an amazing job with her first major lead role as Lorie. Donald Pleasence also did a great job at playing Dr. Loomis who was the psychiatrist of Michael Myers, he also even brought a little comedy to the film but very little. All around Halloween had a pretty good cast. Now to get to the part that makes the slasher films which is the killing scenes. There really isn’t that many kills in the movie but the film did have some solid killing scenes. Myers was very crafty when it came to killing, he stalked his victims for awhile and when he felt it was the right time he would move in for the quick and silent kill. I loved the killing scenes in this film. I feel like they could have showed more, but there was just something about the way Myers killed his victims and how he would jump out and surprise them just made it more exciting. Overall I loved the film and would give it a 9/10.
Halloween (2007)- The Halloween remake that was directed by Rob Zombie was actually worth watching, I liked the film but I didn’t love it. The story line was basically the same as the original but Rob Zombie added more of Michael Myers childhood in the beginning. Instead of jumping to Myers killing his sister the movie opens up with you seeing how screwed up Michael Myers family was and shows him killing rats. We also see how he is kind of bullied at school and he basically doesn’t have the best life. After the scene when Michael gets in trouble and the school looks through the bag and finds pictures of all the animals that Michael has killed, this is when we first see Dr. Loomis. After that we see Myers first killing and then eventually it gets to basically the same story line as the original. Overall the story was pretty good, I thought that they added a little too much information about Myers but it turned out being a solid story. Now to get to the actors, Malcolm McDowell did a very good job as the character Dr. Loomis. The rest of the actors on the other hand I thought were not so good, I just think they didn’t do a good job. Now to get to the killing scenes of this film. The remake of Halloween had a lot of kills and they were pretty brutal and most of the scenes were pretty intense and scary. I loved the killing scenes and Rob Zombie did a great job with them. Myers was also bigger and scarier in general. Overall this was a solid remake to an amazing classic. I would give it a 7.5/10
So in my opinion the original was better then the remake. But the remake was still good and I think you should watch both films.
