Horror movies are great and all, but would they have been as good without the actors that played the lead roles? Most of the iconic horror films had great female leads and I don’t really feel like they get appreciated for the movies success. Today my guest bloggers and I will be giving our top 5 female horror movie icons! This is a versus post so make sure you fill in the poll!
My Top 5
5. Alice (Resident Evil)
Milla Jovovich completely dominated this role and plays the bad ass Alice extremely well. She kicks some major ass in this film and really made these movies enjoyable for all of us.
4. Nancy Thompson (A Nightmare on Elm St)
One of the most memorable female horror movie leads. The girl that outsmarts Freddy not once, but twice. She absolutely deserves a spot on this list.
3. Selene (Underworld)
Played by the beautiful and talented Kate Beckinsale, the character Selene kicks some lycan ass in this film. She was a very strong character and really contributed to this franchises success.
2. Sidney Prescott (Scream)
My all time favorite horror movie/franchises stars one of the most clever and intelligent icons of them all. Played by a very talented Neve Campbell, Sidney must try to survive attacks by a masked killer. This franchised absolutely thrived because of her.
1. Laurie Strode (Halloween)
Jamie Lee Curtis absolutely dominated this role and is definitely the best female horror actor till this very day. She shows such passion when she performs and really takes her character of Laurie to the next level. Even though Laurie isn’t in all of the Halloween films, she is definitely remembered throughout the franchise.
Darren’s Top 5
5. Ginger Fitzgerald (Ginger Snaps)
4. Mary Mason (American Mary)
3. Marybeth (Hatchet)
2. Laurie Strode (Halloween)
1. Marion Crane (Psycho)
Chelsea’s Top 5
5. Sidney Prescott (Scream)
Chelsea I’m so happy you had Ellen Ripley for your #1! People I know seem to forget that Alien is a survival horror movie, first and foremost. They tend to just slap it with scifi and get confused between it and the James Cameron sequel, which was definitely more of an action-scifi, less horror. But Alien WAS HORRIFIC and Ellen Ripley was the first mainstream female action hero (not counting the b-movies).
I would have included Sissy Spacek’s portrayal of Carrie, and Angela Baker from the Sleepaway Camp series. And Nancy. I’d have to think about the last two.
Great post. Nancy from the Nightmare movies has always stood out as my fave.
Sidney Prescott and Ellen Ripley are two of my favourite women in horror movies.
Glad to see Sidney Prescott and Ellen Ripley on the list. It’s too bad the quality of each series diminished with time, but that has more to do with the men making the films. 😉 Also, check out ‘You’re Next.’ It’s MUCH better than expected, and the lead character is a badass young woman!
I have a review of You’re Next up on the site.
