When a group of friends Dobbs (Ryan Donowho), Josh (Brando Eaton) Penny (Jillian Murphy) and bachelor Marcus (Mitch Ryan) head to a deserted island for a night of fun with plenty of drinks and drugs they find out not everything is what it seems. Also on the island is Dr Edwards (Currie Graham) is trying to find a cure for a flesh eating disease, he has the only immune person known Porter (Sean Astin) who Edwards and his team are trying to use to find a cure.
We follow both groups as the day continues and after Josh and Penny start showing the first symptoms of the disease, Marcus and Dobbs investigate the island and stumble on the Lab. Porter has been at the lab for some time now and has reached his breaking point so he goes out his way to make sure the others get infected.
As the story continues the two groups meet and the divides between them becomes clear but most importantly they know they have to stop the spread of the disease before it becomes an outbreak on a global scale.
This is a prequel to the previous instalments but could easily be seen as a sequel. We have the generic group of young people who are all added just to be disposable as well as a science team full of disposable members. Each team does end up having one key person but the desire to be the one who created the cure makes Dr Edwards the villain with Porter causing more problems than he is worth.
The special effects are all very well put together to create some real quality practical effects with the real stand out moment being the fight between Penny and a Nurse that is pure gore filled. It is good that the story doesn’t waste too much time explaining the virus as with previous instalments the basics are already covered. We do get the discovery of what has been happening which adds a few shocks because it gives the chance to show more gore filled effects. Just like the others we get the cliff hanger shock ending to complete the mix and the franchise now is in full effect with Cabin Fever Outbreak entering production.
